DHS Makes Asylum Officers Work Overtime During the First Weekend After Title 42 Ending

(TotalConservative.com) – In response to the Title 42 border policy ending, the Biden administration’s Department of Homeland Security made it mandatory for asylum officers to work the entire weekend to help manage the surge of asylum seekers crossing the border.

In a memo issued on Friday morning, employees were at first informed the previous day that they need to work at least one of the two upcoming weekend days. Now the agency is requesting asylum officers work both Saturday and Sunday.

The memo said that emerging developments over the last day made it clear “that more resources are needed,” and that “immediate steps” must be taken to increase staff numbers for both days during this first weekend without Title 42 in place. All employees are being asked to pitch in, although there will be a few exceptions.

The ending of the pandemic-era policy to quickly expel border-crossers from the U.S. brought a lot of concerns and expectations that a massive surge of migrants will attempt to cross the border, believing it is now more likely they will be able to stay. Although the Department of Homeland Security and President Joe Biden have disputed this claim, the president is also being criticized for not speaking to migrants directly to make it clearer.

With over 10,000 encounters a day over the last three days, according to Border Patrol, and many facilities already at capacity, border towns like El Paso are getting hit the hardest.

In an attempt to lessen the burden on these border towns, Texas Gov Greg Abbott continues to bus migrants out of Texas and into other states. Many of them are ending up in New York City, where Mayor Eric Adams is implementing various measures to deal with the worsening crisis that’s been putting a strain on the Big Apple for over a year.
