Conservative radio host Glenn Beck has been one of Donald Trump’s most outspoken foes. From the beginning of Trump’s campaign, Beck made it clear that he viewed the New York billionaire as a danger to the Republican Party. Now, though, some fans are accusing Beck of going a little too far in his criticism of Trump and Trump’s supporters.
“No Christian, no real Christian — I don’t mean a judgmental Christian, I mean somebody who is living their faith — no real Christian says, ‘I want that guy, that guy is for me,’” Beck said of Trump on Thursday. “Nobody. Nobody.”
Awash in a predictable backlash, Beck apologized for his blanket statement the next day on his website. “I’d like to apologize for any of the comments that I’ve made that offended anyone’s religious sensibilities or implied that I thought you weren’t good Christians,” Beck wrote. “If that’s what I had said, but that’s not what I said.”
Right, but…kinda, it is…
But according to Beck, it’s a vast right-wing conspiracy. “That’s what Breitbart and Drudge and the paid-for Donald Trump media wants you to believe I said,” he wrote.
So wait. In Glenn Beck’s world, the real American media conspiracy is that conservative media sites are in Trump’s pocket? Does he have any proof to back up such allegations? Neither Drudge nor Breitbart are as shamelessly pro-Trump as Beck is pro-Ted Cruz. Everyone has their favorites. But even if Donald Trump is the secret owner of The Drudge Report, it doesn’t change the fact that Beck said what he said.
Beck said in the apology article that he believed Cruz “was anointed for this time.”
At some point – hopefully soon – conservatives on all sides of the 2016 primaries need to wake up and realize what’s at stake here. Some of these lunatics in the Republican establishment have said they would vote for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump! When you hear someone say something like that, you can rest assured that they have lost their way. There is no greater threat to this republic than liberalism, and the Democratic Party is the living embodiment of liberal ideology. Is Trump a perfect Christian? Is he a perfect conservative? Not even Trump himself would claim these honors.
But we’re getting too bogged down in the infighting. Think what you want about Trump, but when it comes to a choice between Trump and any Democrat, there’s simply no comparison. Conservatives who don’t realize this are either blind to the real enemy or they have an ulterior motive.
