(TotalConservative.com) – Over 100 protesters gathered outside a “Drag Queen Story Hour” event hosted by State Attorney General Letitia James on Sunday afternoon, requiring a large police presence to moderate both sides.
The event was hosted at an LGBTQ+ community building called The Center on West 13th Street in the Greenwich Village neighborhood. These controversial events are paid for by taxpayers, who also foot the bill for the City Council’s Sergeant-at-Arms squad that had to attend in order to provide security for a handful of lawmakers attending the event. Councilman Erik Bottcher claims one council member who funded a Drag Story Hour event had unwelcome visitors to his home and his office vandalized, making security necessary.
Co-sponsored by Drag Story Hour NYC, a nonprofit funded by over $200,000 in taxpayer money over the last four years that pays drag performers to read to children in public schools as libraries around the city, some as young as 3.
When James announced the event on Twitter, she said her office “is proud to host a Drag Story Hour read-a-thon” and to invite families to join “drag storytellers, community leaders, and elected officials.”
Bottcher told the New York Post that the event was only “a couple dozen kids with their families just sitting on mats and being read stories,” that “it was like any other story hour” with the only difference being it “happened to be read by a colorful character in a costume.”
He dismissed the idea that such events would “make kids want to grow up to be drag queens” as “ludicrous,” although this is not necessarily representative of the argument made by those who oppose the events, who actually believe they are intended to push gender ideology onto children, confusing them and erasing biological reality.
According to police, at least one protester was arrested from the side opposed to the event for “assaulting a pro-drag agitator.” A reputed member of the right-wing group known as the Proud Boys was also assaulted and escorted to safety by NYPD after his nose was broken, although no arrest was made in connection with the attack.
For several hours, protesters on both sides faced off, waving signs, and shouting at one another.
