(TotalConservative.com) – The spendthrift popular chain Dollar Store Tree is pulling eggs from their stores as the price has gotten too high for them to feel comfortable selling them. With prices soaring 60% or more across the board, the discount chain is temporarily pulling them until prices come back down. Their roughly 8,000 stores across the U.S. and Canada will not be able to offer eggs to shoppers in the meantime.
Avian flu is to blame for the dramatic and sudden increase, though food costs have been going up across the board since the lockdown-associated economic turmoil of the past few years. The average price for eggs was around $5 a dozen for January, putting their pricing well above the $1.25 average price Dollar Tree likes to maintain for their goods.
Many commenters quipped they’d have to rename the store to Five Dollar Tree. The price seems to be stabilizing from its high of around $7/dozen in November 2022. The consumer pricing data indicates it’s dropped 6.7%, but that comes from the government so take it with a grain of salt.
Company Spokesman Randy Guiler reiterated the above speaking to a group of reporters. He said the current price was “very high” and it was difficult to stock the item and keep prices in line with the theme of their store. He also anticipated their return to the shelves when the pricing returned to “historical levels.” He seemed to think this fall, but that might be a long wait for a train that doesn’t come.
With April just around the corner, the price of eggs is again expected to spike due to Easter celebrations which traditionally employ a lot of eggs. The data from the last year or so shows a gradual increase which really took off in November 2022 and continued to rise into January. The total inflation over the last year is around 60-70% above what the price of eggs was this time last year. The wise man has a few egg layers in his backyard.
