The start of the Democratic National Convention was overshadowed this week when a leak of nearly 20,000 DNC emails showed up on WikiLeaks. Supposedly the work of Russian hackers, the leak has exposed the inner workings of this corrupt political party at a time when Hillary Clinton can least afford it. Not only do the released emails show that the DNC was united against Bernie Sanders from the start, they also hint that the organization had its hands in anti-Donald Trump rallies at several points in the raucous primary season.

One email from April 29 has DNC press staffer Rachel Palermo writing to deputy communications director Eric Walker. “Whoo! Thanks to our interns for finding this out,” she wrote, referencing an anti-Trump protest rally planned for South Bend, Indiana.

Walker wrote back: “I like it, as long as the students feel safe getting involved. I imagine this demo will be nicer than the one in San Fran today.”

Readers with long memories will recall that California anti-Trump rallies – with the exception of the disgrace in Chicago – were among the most embarrassing of the year when it came to exposing the violent, tantrum-esque attitudes of the extreme left. Protesters blocked traffic, hurled objects at Trump supporters, and waved Mexican flags in a stunning display of what apparently passes for “patriotism” in 2016.

Later in the year, DNC communications director Luis Miranda pointed out the bad optics of a poorly-planned protest. “Going forward, when our allies screw up and don’t deliver bodies in time, we either send all our interns out there or we stay away from it,” he wrote. “We don’t want to own a bad picture.”

Funny that phrasing, because a “bad picture” is exactly what is being painted by these leaked emails. While the Clinton campaign is trying to distract voters with a wild theory about Russia and Trump collaborating against the former first lady, the rest of the country is enjoying this peek into Democratic National Corruption.

Bernie Sanders supporters will be fixated on the emails showing that DNC officials were working against him in the primaries, but the notion that the Democrats were planning the much-ballyhooed Trump protests is the true news story here. These protests were made to look like genuine, grassroots anger by the news media; these emails show they were a bit more orchestrated than the networks let on. Of course, for that to matter, those same networks would have to investigate this discrepancy and report their findings.

We won’t hold our breath.
