(TotalConservative.com) – First Lady Jill Biden underwent surgery to have cancerous lesions removed from her chest and head, according to the White House. Mrs. Biden went the knife on Wednesday, January 11th.
The President’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, said that the lesions were a form of basal cell carcinoma. He also mentioned a third lesion above her left eyelid was removed and is being examined to determine if it was a similar issue or something else.
Incredibly common, basal cell carcinoma is the most readily treatable form of skin cancer, especially when identified quickly. The growth of the tumors is slow, and since they appear on the skin they are readily identifiable to patients. Surgeons need only remove the surface of the skin with a shallow incision, leaving a minor superficial wound that heals on its own.
The President and his wife spent the day at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, while Jill Biden underwent her procedures. The president returned to the White House after spending nine hours with his wife at the hospital. She returned later that evening.
The First Lady’s Press Secretary said she “was doing well and in good spirits.” Dr. O’Connor told reporters that she may experience “some facial swelling and bruising” as she heals.
The lesion was announced a week ago via a memo from Biden’s doctors, and they found additional growths during further examinations.
The Biden’s were fresh off the plane from their Mexico City summit with other North American leaders. The First Lady was also busy with meetings and events and they had the surgeries performed immediately upon their return.
“Today is about his wife, that is the focus for the president right now,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in response to a question about Biden at the hospital. She further elaborated he wished to support his wife of 45 years.
Biden has been seen accompanying his wife on two other occasions, one where she had a minor medical procedure and another time when she injured her foot on a beach in Hawaii.
