Thanks to Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards, we now have a foolproof way to bring down the number of abortions being sought out and performed every year in the U.S. According to Richards, who appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe last Wednesday, the answer is so simple: The more money the government gives to her organization, the fewer abortions we’ll have in America! Isn’t that the weirdest thing? But it’s apparently true, because…well, why would the leader of a fine, upstanding, patriotic organization like Planned Parenthood just go out there and lie?
“We’re actually now at an historic low for teen pregnancy in the United States of America,” Richards said in the interview. “We’re actually at the lowest rate of abortion since Roe vs. Wade was decided.”
Apparently, we have Planned Parenthood to thank for that, despite the fact that while Richards is right about the abortion rate decreasing, her organization’s abortion rate has been rising year over year. Planned Parenthood actually performed 4,000 more abortions in 2016 than they did in 2015, bringing their grand total to 328,348 for the year. This is their big contribution to bringing DOWN the overall abortion rate? Strange. Very strange.
“If you actually block access to Planned Parenthood, unintended pregnancy will go up, as will the rate of abortion,” Richards said. “Which just seems crazy to us.”
Well, for one thing, no one’s trying to “block” access to Planned Parenthood. Republicans are trying to stop taxpayer money from FUNDING the organization, contingent on its continuation as the largest abortion provider in the nation. Trump has already offered them the ultimate olive branch: Stop performing abortions, and he’ll leave your funding where it is. So far, Richards has not accepted this offer, despite her brash contention that her organization is responsible for bringing down the abortion rate in America. Despite her contention that abortion only makes up a teensy, tiny part of the overall Planned Parenthood business model. But yet, there certainly are unwilling to give up that teensy, tiny part for the sake of all these other important healthcare services they supposedly provide. Interesting.
To give MSNBC’s Willie Geist credit, he actually reminded Richards of Trump’s offer.
“He said recently that, if you stop performing at abortions at Planned Parenthood, you could keep all your federal funding,” Geist said. “Is that something you ever would consider?”
“No, I think it’s really important, Willie,” Richards said quickly. “It doesn’t make any sense. It’s a legal right women have.”
Yes, yes it is.
But it’s also our collective right not to fund abortion through our taxes. In fact, it is specifically FORBIDDEN by the Hyde Amendment. And the idea that our money isn’t going to fund abortion is ridiculous, because Planned Parenthood can simply take the money from another part of their business model.
Publicly-funded abortion needs to come to an end. And when it does, we somehow doubt that the abortion rate in America will go up.
But hey, there’s only one way to find out.
