GOP Senators Rally to Defend DeSantis

(TotalConservative.com) – Republican Senators have rallied behind Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and defended him from attack by former President Donald Trump. DeSantis has not yet said if he intends to run for the White House in 2024, but Trump said it would be a “great act of disloyalty” if he decides to do so. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said of DeSantis, “He ran an impressive campaign for governor from an important state. It looks to me like he’s polling well. I think we need some new blood and I think he’d probably qualify.”

DeSantis is emerging as the frontrunner to defeat Trump for the nomination. While the former President is the only one to declare his intentions so far, Republicans on Capitol Hill are hinting toward support for DeSantis. Senators including Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo), Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), and Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) have all disagreed publicly that DeSantis owes any loyalty to Trump.

A war of words began to emerge between the two in late January when Trump once again attacked the Florida Governor and labeled him a “globalist” and a game player. DeSantis, who usually does not respond to Trump’s provocations, said his record spoke for itself. “In my case, I was re-elected,” he told reporters in Tallahassee.

As Republicans grapple with who is best to reverse the effects of the disastrous Biden White House, Trump has reportedly started to dig for dirt on his potential Floridian rival. According to a Rolling Stone magazine report, sources from inside the Trump camp say the former President is planning to attack DeSantis on personal issues such as apparent lack of likeability and charisma and to paint the Florida Governor as an establishment figure.
