At the Democratic presidential debate on Sunday, former Vice President Joe Biden made it clear that he is not the man we want in charge in the event of a coronavirus-caused economic recession. In Biden’s zeal to prove that he’s the man when it comes to combating climate change, he said that he would essentially destroy the U.S. fossil fuel industry, slashing our economic advantages and decimating the workforce at a time we can least afford it.

“No more subsidies for fossil fuel industry, no more drilling on federal lands, no more drilling including offshore, no ability for the oil industry to continue to drill,” Biden said. “Period. Ends. No new fracking and, by the way, on the Recovery Act, I was able to make sure we invested $90 billion in making sure we brought down the price of solar and wind that is lower than the price of coal, that’s why not another new coal plant will be built.”

Right. Solar. Wind.

Sounds like a plan, Joe.

“We in fact have the ability to lay down the tracks where no one can change the dynamic, and that’s why we should be talking about things like I’ve been talking about for years: high speed rail, taking millions of automobiles off the road,” Biden said.

Biden’s proposals prove that he was doing more than just pandering when he expressed support for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s “Green New Deal” last summer. He really means to put his administration on a collision course with the fossil fuel industry, making promises that go well beyond anything Obama did with his Clean Power Plan. Biden’s policies would gut the economy, put thousands if not millions of Americans out of work, and make recovering from a recession all but impossible.

It’s kind of amazing that CNN’s moderators thought that viewers would even be slightly interested in listening to Biden and Bernie Sanders debate the merits of their respective climate change plans in the first place. While the two Democrats were fighting it out in an empty studio, the Centers for Disease Control was recommending that all gatherings of more than 50 people be banned for at least eight weeks. The stock market is in freefall. Store shelves have been stripped of products across the United States.

And we’re talking about a temperature crisis that might materialize in 50 to 100 years?

There’s a developing crisis in the United States right now, and if either of these bozos replace Trump in the White House, the recovery is going to be slow and ugly.
