(TotalConservative.com) – Popular job-search platforms are being used as mediums for AI-power scams, according to a new report from the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC). The organization issued a bulletin on June 26 highlighting its 2023 Trends In Identity Report which slammed digital job search platforms and social media for acting as major facilitators of the fraudsters
The ITRC highlighted that bad-actors are using AI-generated content to improve the quality of their scam emails and messages, where previously foreigners who had little or no working knowledge of the English language came across as clunky and obvious. The report added that victims are having to cope with more frequent and severe identity-theft issues with AI-powered scams.
Cybercrimes using AI have been able to completely and accurately fabricate voice messages and even visuals of loved ones, colleagues, and potential business partners all to scam and mislead individuals. ITRC’s press release highlighted an increase in job scams despite an overall decrease in scamming by 18% for 2023.
Job scams specifically target job seekers with fake jobs looking to steal their personal information via having them voluntarily send in a resume for a nonexistent job. The identity thieves then probe job seekers for additional personal information like their Social Security number, driver’s license ID number, or login information for digital services.
Most commonly used by thieves is Google Voice; the scam creates a Google Voice account using stolen identity information from actual U.S. residents to then create the impression that the call is coming from within the country when actually the scammers are somewhere outside of it. The scammers will then target individuals who post public contact information on marketplace websites using animal sales, residential rentals, and even regular items for sale as ostensible reasons to contact people. From there, they’ll attempt to coerce payment or otherwise steal personal data from these people as well.
Congressional regulators and business executives as well as researchers in the field will have to determine the best way to regulate the expansion of artificial-intelligence, of which the current limited language models are an early example. Some observers have suggested similar regulations as currently exist to regulate energy and finance: government watchdog agencies which maintain control over the limits and products made available by the private sector.
