(TotalConservative.com) – Kevin Costner and his wife filed for divorce in May. The couple have been married for 18 years and have three children together. Costner will be represented throughout the process by one of Hollywood’s most famous attorneys, Laura Wasser, known as the “the disso queen” for her impressive track record of dissolving the marriages of the wealthy and earning around $1,000 per hour.
Famous for her no-nonsense approach, Wasser once said, “I say to clients all the time, the more you argue, the more conflict there is, the more I get paid.” Despite the big payouts, she often advises against divorce, particularly for celebrities, who she says have the added burden of their public perception to consider before making firm decisions on the future of their relationships.
Costner will likely need a no-nonsense lawyer as reports suggest proceedings have already turned nasty. In the first court hearing in early July, the star’s estranged wife, Christine Baumgartner, was told to vacate the couple’s $145 million mansion by the end of July. The court’s ruling on Baumgartner’s departure is in line with the terms of the couple’s prenuptial agreement, which stipulates that she must leave the premises within one month of a divorce filing – regardless of who initiates proceedings.
Holly Davis of Kirker Davis LLP said the court’s enforcement of the prenup regarding the couple’s mansion does not necessarily mean the rest of the agreement will be adhered to.
The issue is proving to be an early sticking point between the warring couple, as Costner said his wife refuses to leave. He also accused her of over-spending and has cancelled her credit cards. Baumgartner is reportedly asking for almost $250,000 per month to find suitable alternative accommodations for herself and her children.
Kevin Costner married Christine Baumgartner in 2004. She is his second spouse – he married his first wife Cindy in 1978 but divorced in 1994. Costner’s net worth is around $250 million.
