Last week, the Associated Press revealed Hillary Clinton’s State Department office to be a welcoming home for anyone who donated generously to the Clinton Foundation, and now Senate Republican John Cornyn is accusing the former Secretary of misleading the Senate on her way to a nearly unanimous confirmation vote in 2009.
At the time, Cornyn expressed grave reservations about a potential conflict of interest. He temporarily blocked her nomination due to those concerns, only giving in after receiving some assurances from Clinton.
“When I put a hold on Mrs. Clinton’s nomination as secretary of state, she reassured me that they would take appropriate steps,” he said in an interview with The Hill. “As seems to be usual for the Clintons, they crossed the line and all the concerns that she reassured me would not occur did in fact occur.”
Cornyn said that Clinton turned the nation’s highest diplomatic office into a center for corruption.
“She was playing both sides,” he said. “As she was performing her job of secretary of State, the Clinton Foundation was shaking down donors who were buying access. It’s absolutely deplorable.”
Cornyn said that only a special prosecutor could deliver the truth about Clinton’s controversial tenure at the State Department, though he isn’t hopeful about that happening under President Obama.
“Once again, the rules don’t apply to them like they apply to everybody else,” he lamented. “Can you imagine if anybody else in the United States government had tried to get away with something like this? It wouldn’t have happened.”
Cornyn told The Hill that if he had it to do over again, things would not have played out the same way.
“I would not have voted for her confirmation and would have done a lot more to slow down the process and potentially stop it,” he said.
Cornyn, of course, won’t get the opportunity to go back in time and keep Hillary Clinton from scandalizing the State Department. No matter. His opportunity has become ours, and the stakes are even higher. Today, with everything we know about Clinton’s tenure as Secretary, we don’t need to do any handwringing about whether or not she can be trusted. Every week – hell, every DAY – we get fresh insight into the deceptions that built her political career.
A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote for secret political donations. A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote for corrupt establishment politics. A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote for lawlessness.
If that’s the future you want, then you’re with her.
