Ah, they never learn. While House Democrats have stopped short of directly threatening to impeach President Donald Trump, again, over his decision to temporarily suspend funding to the World Health Organization, they said in a statement this week that he is guilty of violating the same laws he broke when withholding aid to Ukraine last year. We’d say that amounts to suggesting impeachment, if not an outright warning to the president. As if another failed impeachment debacle is what this country needs at a time of crisis.
Trump announced on Tuesday that he was blocking new U.S. funding for the WHO while his administration looks into the organization’s woefully-mismanaged response to the coronavirus pandemic. That response, colored by the organization’s fealty to China, potentially set disaster in motion across the globe. As of mid-January, the WHO – relying heavily on untrustworthy reports from Chinese officials – insisted that there was “no evidence of person-to-person transmission” of the disease.
In a statement, Evan Hollander of the Democrat-controlled House Appropriations Committee said that Trump’s decision to withhold funding from the WHO was a violation of the law.
“In a desperate attempt to deflect blame, President Trump is violating the same spending laws that brought about his impeachment. The president does not have the unilateral authority to withhold the United States’ assessed contribution to the World Health Organization,” Hollander said, falsely.
He was echoed by the committee’s chairwoman, Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY), who said that Trump was playing “petty, counterproductive political games.”
Well, if anyone would know about those…
“House Democrats argued that suspending funding would hamper the global response to the disease ripping across the globe. They also contended he cannot withdraw money already appropriated by Congress under its constitutional authority — suggesting a court fight over Trump’s power looms if he pulls funding,” reported CNBC on Thursday.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also weighed in, saying that the decision to withhold funding was “dangerous, illegal, and will be swiftly challenged.”
President Trump shot back, tweeting: “She is totally incompetent and controlled by the Radical Left, a weak and pathetic puppet. Come back to Washington and do your job!”
Exactly. It is the height of arrogance for Democrats to complain about the “dangerous” action of cutting funding to the WHO while also blocking additional funding for American small businesses. Pelosi needs to worry more about getting her caucus under control and less about how much money goes to the China apologists at the United Nations.
