Though he has been arrested no less than three times on various charges by law enforcement officials in Washington state, El Salvadoran illegal immigrant Carlos Iraheta-Vega was never turned over to ICE. Why? You know why. The state of Washington has very strict sanctuary policies on the books which forbid local police and city officials from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. So if you have an illegal immigrant criminal in custody, you can’t notify ICE. You can’t respond to a federal detainer request. You certainly can’t turn said criminal over to the deportation squad. No, you have to treat them just like the loving, valuable members of the community that Democrats want us to believe they are.

Inevitably, these idiotic policies lead to tragedy. As they did in this case when, last month, Iraheta-Vega and an accomplice murdered 16-year-old Juan Carlos Con Guzman with a machete, chopped up his body, and dumped the remains into a river.

“As Iraheta-Vega’s crimes increased in severity, local officials chose to release him, time and time again, without notification to ICE, a simple process that could have potentially prevented this crime,” ICE said in a statement. “This scenario, where sanctuary policies shield criminal aliens who prey on people in the community from immigration enforcement, is becoming all too common.”

In remarks to the press, ICE regional director Bryan Wilcox said this was a situation that was all-too-avoidable.

“There are people getting arrested every day in this state that in many cases, we’re aware of them, we put detainers on them, and they’re ignored,” he said. “People get released, and they go on to commit other atrocious acts.”

Iraheta-Vega, 20, was joined in his crime by Garcia Hernandez, 28. They are both illegal immigrants and are both members of the vicious MS-13 gang, according to King County prosecutors.

“Prosecutors allege the men lured Juan Carlos Con Guzman, a student at Mount Rainier High School in Des Moines, from his home to fight on Sept. 10, then drove to a remote location near the river ‘with a plan to torture and kill him,’ according to charges,” reports the Seattle Times. “Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Mary Barbosa wrote in the charges that the suspects beat Con Guzman with a baseball bat before hitting him repeatedly with a machete and dismembering him. ‘The extraordinary brutality of this crime demonstrates the threat the defendants pose to the community,’ she wrote.”

Indeed. A threat that might have been neutralized were it not for bleeding-heart liberals who put the rights of illegal gangsters ahead of the rights of Hispanic citizens of these United States. We’d like to think that a tragic crime like this will change things, but as we’ve seen in so many instances, these liberals would rather see Americans murdered every day than actually admit they are wrong.
