Pork products have been banned in America’s federal prison facilities, and critics are skeptical of the reasons given for the move. The Bureau of Prisons says that the decision is purely economical.
“Why keep pushing food that people don’t want to eat?” asked Bureau spokesman Edmond Ross in an interview with the Washington Post. “Pork has been the lowest-rated food by inmates for several years.”
According to Ross, the price of pork has gone up recently, a factor that also contributed to the ban.
The Council for Islamic-American Relations praised the decision. “In general we welcome the change because it’s facilitating the accommodation of Muslim inmates,” CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said. “We hope it’s not an indication of an increasing number of Muslims in the prison system.”
So while the feds say this had nothing to do with Islam’s rules against pork consumption, the ban obviously has supporters in the Islamic community. What are the chances that the Bureau is lying when they cite pork’s lack of popularity? As a spokesman for the pork industry pondered, were inmates really turning their noses up at bacon?
So the question then becomes: How far are we willing to bend to make accommodations for American Muslims? How much do we have to change our own culture so that they feel welcome? Does it stop with pork, or do we need to make some adjustments in other areas? Should all Christian churches be outfitted with a prayer space for Muslims? Should our women begin covering their heads? How much Sharia should we add in to our laws, approximately? We might as well decide now.
Tolerance is one thing. What you’re seeing, though, has nothing to do with tolerance. This is a takeover in slow motion. And with hundreds of thousands of Muslim refugees on their way, the “slow” part will no longer be applicable.
Who looked at the Middle East and decided, Hey, we should be more like that? Why is it so controversial to look at this religion and the way it is being practiced by so many Muslims and say, “Um, this is obviously wrong.” Are we that insecure about our own history that we can’t make a perfectly sane judgment call like that? Why do we insist on pretending that every culture has equal value?
But it’s even worse, because we don’t pretend that. No, no. If you’re a protestant Christian, then your culture is garbage. That’s the only one. Well, and if you’re from the South, but usually the two go hand in hand. Certainly, as far as the left is concerned, they are virtually synonymous. And this is the evil that is killing the country. Not Islam. Not liberalism. Not a president who left the law behind a long time ago. No. Traditional Christianity and southern pride is the root of all American misery.
But hey, it’s probably just that prisoners don’t like bacon. Nothing to worry about. Go back to your business. It’s those damned Islamophobes at it again, crying wolf. And if you happen to see a wolf, just ignore it. It won’t hurt you.
Everything’s just fine…
