In his new column this week, New York Times pontificator Thomas Friedman said that the mainstream media should “absolutely” continue covering everything President Trump does or says – not only because it is the mark of responsible journalism but because, gosh darnit, it’s really helping Democrats win elections!

“Some healthy soul searching is taking place in newsrooms across the country these days over whether the mainstream media should be covering President Trump’s every tweet and rally. My answer: Absolutely! It’s the right thing for us to do professionally, and, as last night’s election results indicated, it’s the right thing to do politically if you want to see a check on Donald Trump’s power,” he wrote.

The right thing to do politically?

Hold on. Wait a minute. The right thing to do POLITICALLY?

Maybe Friedman knows something we don’t, but we thought the whole point of unbiased, objective journalism was to present the facts and not worry about how they affected things “politically.” Is Friedman telling us that’s not the case? Is he admitting that the journalists and editors and owners of The New York Times have an agenda that goes well beyond the Editorial Page? Surely that’s not what he’s saying, because why, that would confirm literally everything President Trump has been saying about the media since he came onto the political stage.

“America’s unemployment rate is 3.9 percent, inflation for the moment is moderate, the stock market keeps setting records, and the president is coming off a crisis-defusing summit with North Korea,” Friedman noted. “And yet, the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls shows Trump having a personal approval rating of only 43 percent, with 53 percent disapproving of his performance. And in a special election in Ohio held on Tuesday, the G.O.P. House candidate — whom Trump and the entire Republican establishment went to bat for — is barely ahead of his Democratic rival in a district that has not sent a Democrat to Congress in more than three decades.”

Here, Friedman is blatantly admitting – in the pages of one of the most anti-Trump papers in the country – that Trump is doing an amazing job on all fronts. He’s admitting that the ONLY reason his popularity isn’t through the roof is that the media is completely ignoring all that stuff in favor of a news agenda that picks apart every tweet and goes searching for the most controversial tidbits their anonymous White House sources can cough up. He’s admitting, in other words, that when Trump blasts the media for covering his presidency in a biased, phony, FAKE fashion that he’s absolutely 100% right on the money.

Friedman gets paid to share his left-wing opinions; it’s not a problem, therefore, that he hates this president and wants him gone. The problem is that as a representative of The New York Times, he thinks it’s perfectly okay to justify and encourage biased news reporting as a way of achieving that goal. And the biggest problem is that his employers apparently think the same way.
