NYC Mayor Backpedals On Sanctuary City Legislation

(TotalConservative.com) – Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams is backpedaling from his former position of encouraging the Big Apple to become a sanctuary city to now supporting legislation to halt the influx of immigrants.

On Tuesday, July 9, Adams blamed his predecessor, former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, whose administration Adams said “made a big mistake” by making the city into a sanctuary city. Adams declared his support for a bill brought forward by New York City Council members of the Common Sense Caucus, a bipartisan caucus trying to mitigate the impact of rapid immigration on the city and its resources by rolling back legislation passed by de Blasio in 2014 and expanded in 2018.

The de Blasio-era legislation prevents local law enforcement from complying with retainers issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)

Adams said that New Yorkers have the right “to be safe in their city” and that he will continue to voice his “concern” over anyone who commits crimes against the city’s citizens. When he first took office, the mayor held a more liberal stance on immigration, touting the open-arms approach. His tune quickly shifted as the influx put more and more strain on city resources and it became more difficult to house and feed all of the new arrivals.

Since 2022, more than 200,000 immigrants have entered the Big Apple looking for hands out and opportunities. The influx resulted in massive budget cuts in everything from social services programs to sanitation in order to meet demands. Adams has also continued to call on the federal government to send additional aid, accusing the Biden administration of leaving the city high and dry.

Last September, Adams warned that the situation could “destroy” the city, and the following month he said they were reaching a “breaking point” from the volume of new-comers. In January 2023, Adams also visited Texas to see the situation at the border himself.
