Not satisfied with pressuring doctors to talk to their patients about gun control, President Obama made it clear this week that he would also like them to address climate change. If it seems like a stretch for your family physician to sit you down for a talk about global warming, consider yourself lucky. All things being equal, at least you don’t suffer from the communicable plague known as Type 1 Liberalism.
“We also need doctors, nurses and citizens, like all of you,” Obama said in a recorded speech to medical professionals this week, “to get to work to raise awareness and organize folks for real change.”
One might expect that most medical professionals would be loathe to participate in this nakedly political strategy, especially considering how damaging Obamacare has been to their field. Gee, Obama, you think you could help us out before you come asking for a favor? On the other hand, these particular professionals were invited to the White House so the sample may not reflect reality.
This is the latest attempt for the administration to link health and global warming. And since anti-gun Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has promised to remain silent on gun control, he has to find another way to get up on his political soapbox. By going along with Obama’s plan, he reaffirms the widespread belief that his was a wholly partisan appointment.
“We need to engage medical students themselves,” Murthy said, “to demand the curriculum change” so they are better equipped to deal with the inevitable consequences of climate change.
Obama doesn’t just want doctors to discuss global warming with their patients; he wants to recruit them as outright political activists. “Stand behind the EPA,” said House Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson. And if that isn’t the creepiest 1984 command we hear this year, then we must have a scary six months coming.
The Evidence is Thin
Regardless of how you look at the science behind global warming, the evidence is weak when it comes to drawing links to public health. This is an administration that is now being almost wholly puppeted by leftist activist groups. Time and again, they have ignored even their own federal studies to pursue legislation that stifles the economy to no significant benefit.
But worse than that, this is an administration willing to endanger the trust Americans have in their doctors. Is your doctor recommending this because it’s in your best interests, or is he carrying water for his own liberal agenda? Let’s hope that most doctors have enough ethical integrity to leave their politics at home.
