So. He’s back.

Former President Barack Obama delighted the Resistance on Friday by delivering his first overtly-political speech since leaving office in January 2017. The speech, which Obama gave after receiving an ethics in government award from the University of Illinois, intentionally broke with the modern day tradition of ex-presidents leaving their successors to do the job in peace. This is a gift that George W. Bush gave to Obama, but Obama is apparently unable to return the favor. So entranced is he by the sound of his own voice that a year and a half out of the spotlight was all he could manage before coming back to…basically spew all the same, lecturing crap that we’ve heard from him for years.

After ticking off some of the supposed sins of the current administration, Obama launched into this lecture:

None of this is conservative. I don’t mean to pretend I’m channeling Abraham Lincoln now, but that’s not what he had in mind, I think, when he helped form the Republican Party. It’s not conservative. It sure isn’t normal. It’s radical. It’s a vision that says the protection of our power and those who back us is all that matters even when it hurts the country.

It’s a vision that says the few who can afford high-priced lobbyists and unlimited campaign contributions set the agenda, and over the past two years, this vision is now nearing its logical conclusion. So with Republicans in control of Congress and the White House, without any checks or balances whatsoever, they’ve provided another $1.5 trillion in tax cuts to people like me — who I promise don’t need it — and don’t even pretend to pay for them.

The speech was an exercise in arrogance, and that’s really something, for it to be noticeable in the Age of Trump. Because let’s face it: For whatever else Donald Trump is, humble is not among his most prominent character traits. His is an extraordinary ego, tempered only by a knowing sense of humor; in other words, Trump is well aware of his own cockiness.

What makes Obama’s arrogance so much worse is that he lacks this self-awareness. He imbues his arrogance with a false modesty that only underscores just how inflated his sense of importance really is. He is the ultimate “above it all” avatar, so certain that he’s the only one who has really figured it out while the rest of us rubes just flounder away in ignorance. In his speech, Obama chastised not only Trump, but Republicans and even progressives. Because the only one who really knows the path forward is Barack Obama the Wise, and we must all set aside our daily lives to sit at his glorious feet and listen to his Grand Sermon of Democracy.

Someone pass the barf bag.
