The Democratic National Committee must be feeling a little jumpy these days. Perhaps they’ve been watching too much CNN, where Big Bad Russia is constantly on the prowl for Democrats to dethrone! In any event, DNC officials called the FBI this week to report HACKERS IN THE SYSTEM (!!)…alas, it turned out that it was merely a cybersecurity test being carried out by the Michigan Democratic Party. Apparently the folks in Michigan didn’t bother to tell their national counterparts that they were going to do the test, the IT department freaked, and much fun was had by all. And while the DNC is probably embarrassed by the “false alarm” headlines, they managed to keep the specter of EVIL RUSSIAN HACKERS in the news for yet another cycle, so you can’t say it was all for nothing.

On Wednesday, Bob Lord, the top security officer for the DNC, told the press that the phishing effort they detected “is further proof that there are constant threats as we head into midterm elections, and we must remain vigilant in order to prevent future attacks.”

But later in the day, Lord was forced to offer a sheepish new statement. “We, along with the partners who reported the site,” he said, “now believe it was built by a third party as part of a simulated phishing test on VoteBuilder. The test, which mimicked several attributes of actual attacks on the Democratic party’s voter file, was not authorized by the DNC, VoteBuilder nor any of our vendors.”

Before Lord and the DNC realized they’d been bamboozled by their own allies, the security chief tried to use the phishing effort as a sideways attack on President Trump.

“These threats are serious and that’s why it’s critical that we all work together, but we can’t do this alone,” Lord told CNN. “We need the administration to take more aggressive steps to protect our voting systems. It is their responsibility to protect our democracy from these types of attacks.”

Okay, a couple of things. One, how in the hell is the Trump administration going to stop hackers from setting up a fake website designed to fool stupid DNC officials into giving away their password information? Two, it amuses us to no end that when it comes to their precious emails and their little voter database, Democrats are super serious about “protecting our voting systems,” which their private enterprise is not a part of in any way. But when it comes to rooting out voter fraud, which actually DOES concern the integrity of our democracy, they are not only absent but are actively fighting against the effort.

In any event, this looks like another example of the Democrats crying wolf. And as long as “THE RUSSIAN CYBER THREAT” remains one of their chief political platforms, we’re sure they’ll continue to call the FBI every time anyone at the DNC gets a spam email in their inbox. It sure beats coming up with a message that actually resonates with the voters, after all.
