Police arrested 75-year-old Martin Astrof on Friday after he threatened to kill supporters of President Trump and New York Rep. Lee Zeldin in a fiery confrontation at Zeldin’s Long Island campaign headquarters.

Police said that Astrof appeared at the campaign office that morning, threatened to kill a campaign worker and, indeed, nearly ran over the worker when he “backed his car up in an aggressive manner.”

Astrof, a registered Democrat, fled the scene and was ultimately arrested at his home that afternoon.

“In the US, political scores are settled at the ballot box, not by trying to kill your political opponents,” Rep. Zeldin wrote on Twitter on Friday evening. “Donato Panico is a great American, supporter of @realDonaldTrump & one of my campaign vols. He shouldn’t have been targeted like this today for his passion & involvement.”

Zeldin has extended an invitation to Panico – the targeted victim in the attack – to join him at the president’s State of the Union address in January.

Astrof will be charged with one count of reckless endangerment and one count of making a terroristic threat.

We obviously can’t paint with too broad a brush here – God only knows what might have gotten into Astrof’s head that made him go down to Zeldin’s campaign headquarters on Friday – but you also can’t ignore the general state of the #Resistance. This didn’t happen in a vacuum. It happened in a media environment that is trying to make the American people believe we have a Russian traitor in the White House. It happened in an environment where Americans are being told that we have a Nazi-esque situation unfolding at the border. It happened in an environment where you have elected Democrats actively encouraging people to protest Trump administration officials wherever they go, refuse them service at restaurants, and do whatever else they must to make them feel unwelcome in public.

The day after Astrof was arrest in New York, protesters showed up to a Louisville restaurant to shout at Mitch McConnell about the “babies” at the border. Also on Saturday, a lone crazy liberal started screaming at Steve Bannon in a Richmond, Virginia bookstore. We assume that both of these incidents were met with smiling approval from people like Maxine Waters.

What happens when one of these nutballs brings a gun with them? Or a knife? Or, like Astrof, just decides to get a wee bit homicidal with their vehicle? Is the left going to wait for someone to get seriously hurt or killed before they tone down the rhetoric?

Then again, Rep. Steve Scalise might argue that we’re already long past that point.
