Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have been spitting mad that illegal aliens are ineligible for the $2.2 trillion stimulus package that was passed in Congress last month, arguing that undocumented workers are every bit as entitled to their checks as U.S. citizens. But in California, Gov. Gavin Newsom is going a step further. Instead of relying on Washington to take care of the state’s illegal alien population, he’s announcing a special fund that will give 150,000 immigrants $500 each.

“We feel a deep sense of gratitude for people that are in fear of deportations that are still addressing essential needs of tens of millions of Californians,” said Newsom, a Democrat.

According to the governor, the money will come from a special $125 million fund created through a mixture of charitable donations and taxpayer money. Newsom did not explain how giving $500 to 150,000 illegal immigrants will make a difference to the state’s population of 2 million+ aliens, but hey, it lets him get some good press in the liberal media.

And if that was the goal, well, mission accomplished. Time, the AP, Mother Jones, and many other outlets wrote up glowing stories about the governor’s generous efforts.

Newsom also attracted effusive praise from California activist groups.

“This is a recognition of the fact that immigrant families are essential to our state,” the Coalition for Human Immigrant Rights said in a statement. “Immigrants are one-third of the workers in California who are in the front lines fighting COVID-19 and their loved ones are hurting from this pandemic, yet the federal government has ignored them.”

“Today’s announcement is a necessary first step to close the widening gap between immigrants and vital assistance that could mean the difference between life and death for millions of Californians,” said the National Day Laborer Organization Network. “Our hope is that the actions taken by Gov. Newsom today will catalyze public and private partnerships to encourage additional measures to ensure that all people in California—regardless of immigration status—receive equal protection under the law.”

Not sure how free money from the government counts as “equal protection under the law,” and we’re not sure why illegal residents would be entitled to that in the first place, but then, there are a great many things that we don’t understand about those groups that support illegal immigrants. It’s perhaps no surprise that this one has flown over our heads as well.

Welp, if California taxpayers and businesses want to support these people financially, we suppose that’s their prerogative. We keep waiting for law-abiding California residents to revolt, but apparently they’re just fine with this permanent underclass that Sacramento’s Democrats have allowed to take root.
