According to Governor Ralph Torres of the Northern Mariana Islands – a U.S. territory – his $1,000/gun sales tax should be used as a “role model” for other municipalities, territories, and states. The law, signed earlier this month, assesses a $1,000 tax against each and every handgun purchase. The idea that such a tax could pass muster inside the United States would seem laughable, but some experts think it’s all-too-easy to imagine.

Among them, Grover Norquist, the president of Americans for Tax Reform. In a press release, the group warned that this was the new weapon of choice for gun-grabbing liberals.

“The Left is now seeking to tax guns out of existence,” said Norquist. “The Second Amendment makes it difficult to legally ban guns, but Hillary has led the way to explaining you can achieve the same thing with high taxes.”

Hillary?

Norquist points to testimony the Democratic frontrunner gave in 1993 before the Senate Finance Committee. At that time, asked by Sen. Bill Bradley if she would support a national 25% sales tax on firearms, Clinton said, “I am speaking personally, but I feel very strongly about that. I’m all for that.”

Bradley thanked her profusely for her support, with the understanding that she was speaking for herself and not then-President Bill Clinton.

On the campaign trail in 2016, Hillary has not specifically made a national gun tax a part of her platform. That said, she has repeatedly attacked her opponent, Bernie Sanders, for being weak on gun control. Whether her rhetoric is based on personal passion or political calculation is up for debate, but there is one thing that is not in doubt: as president, Hillary Clinton will likely have a number of chances to nominate a Supreme Court Justice. And the abolition – or at least the redefinition – of the Second Amendment is an entrenched goal of the academic left.

But even if we were to agree that it was important to pass new gun control legislation, it’s hard to imagine a less-effective form of it than this one. The handgun black market would explode overnight, exacerbating one of the very problems that liberals are supposedly trying to solve. Then again, this is the likely outcome of any significant re-imagining of the Second Amendment. Not only will currently-law-abiding gun owners refuse to give up their rights, but millions of otherwise apathetic Americans will finally wake up to the fact that a disarmed populace is rather defenseless against a tyrannical state.

Oh no, but it will be fine, they say.

The same liberals who think that police are nothing more than 21st century Nazis want to give them total, unchallenged power over the citizenry. And with this gun tax, they apparently want to restrict firearm ownership to only the rich – their most despised enemies.

Cigarettes, soda, now guns. The world waits with anticipation to see which societal ill the Democrats can tax out of existence next! It’s bound to be a doozy because, after all, who’s going to stop them?
