Critics last year took turns scoffing at President Donald Trump and feigning horror over his rhetoric as it pertained to the denuclearization of North Korea. Most assumed that Trump was in over his head with the geopolitical struggle and would soon either embarrass the United States on the world stage or lead us recklessly into a disastrous war with the mad dictator Kim Jong Un. Certainly, very few in the mainstream media thought it possible that Trump would succeed where his three predecessors had miserably failed.

But according to a new report from the New York Times, he may be on the verge of a major victory – one that would, all by itself, put him in the running for one of the finest presidencies in our nation’s history.

Kim Jong Un, reportedly, is ready to talk about giving up his nukes.

From the Times:

North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, has told South Korean envoys that his country is willing to begin negotiations with the United States on abandoning its nuclear weapons and that it would suspend all nuclear and missile tests while it is engaged in such talks, South Korean officials said on Tuesday.

During the envoys’ two-day visit to Pyongyang, the North’s capital, which ended on Tuesday, the two Koreas also agreed to hold a summit meeting between Mr. Kim and President Moon Jae-in of South Korea on the countries’ border in late April, Mr. Moon’s office said in a statement.

“The North Korean side clearly stated its willingness to denuclearize,” the statement said. “It made it clear that it would have no reason to keep nuclear weapons if the military threat to the North was eliminated and its security guaranteed.”

North Korea has not yet corroborated the statement, but this could mark a major shift in Kim’s policy. Thus far, the regime has held steadfast to the line that for whatever else they might bargain about, they would not give up their nuclear program. It could be that after serious military threats from the U.S. and some of the harshest sanctions the world has ever passed against a nation, Kim Jong Un is finally beginning to realize that he is out of options. If he wants his power to remain, he is going to have to kiss his nuclear weapons goodbye.

Since it’s Kim Jong Un we’re talking about, we’ll believe it when we see it. But if this report heralds a true shift in thinking on the part of the North Korean regime, even the Trump-hating media will have no choice but to give him credit for this major win.

Alas, they’ll probably find a way to credit Obama instead.
