According to Politico, Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri intends to hold Democrats’ feet to the impeachment fire by drawing up motions that will force a vote on the subpoenas of Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, Adam Schiff, and the (officially) “unknown” whistleblower. Hawley revealed that he will introduce the motions if and when the Senate approves calling additional witnesses for the impeachment trial.
“Hawley would also seek communications among the whistleblower, Schiff and his staff, transcripts of Atkinson’s congressional testimony, communications between the House impeachment managers and Democratic presidential candidates as well as documents related to Biden’s drive to oust former Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin,” reported Politico.
Hawley is joined in his efforts by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who told Politico that any Republicans who think they’re going to vote against calling these witnesses and retain political immunity are simply kidding themselves.
“If you vote against Hunter Biden, you’re voting to lose your election, basically,” Paul said. “Seriously. That’s what it is. If you don’t want to vote and you think you’re going to have to vote against Hunter Biden, you should just vote against witnesses, period.”
Hawley’s motions are nonetheless unlikely to attract support from establishment Republican senators who are already trying to thread a needle with this impeachment. The senators seen as potential swing votes – Mitt Romney, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, etc. – have expressed interest in hearing from additional witnesses like John Bolton and Mick Mulvaney, but there’s no reason to think they would vote to hear from the Bidens.
Even Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who has been a stern opponent of this impeachment witchhunt from the beginning, has come out against the idea of calling the Bidens to testify.
“To my Republican friends, you may be upset about what happened in Ukraine with the Bidens, but this is not the venue to litigate that. I need some Republicans who would say, as much as I want to know more about Burisma and the Bidens, this is not the venue,” Graham said.
Well, as much as we appreciate what Graham has done and said over the last couple of months, he couldn’t be more wrong. This is the ONLY venue appropriate for a public inquiry into the Bidens. That’s what all of this is about! The Democrats only have their raggedy case because of the presumption that the Bidens did nothing wrong. Blow apart that assumption, and the impeachment case is even more transparently partisan than we know it to be already.
This is war, guys. Get in the game.
