(TotalConservative.com) – A group of Republican senators, spearheaded by Sen. Lindsey Graham, are asking President Joe Biden to consider reversing the decision to suspend Title 42 next week due to growing concerns that a massive influx of migrant encounters at the southern border will immediately follow its termination.
In a letter to the president, the GOP senators implored Biden to reverse his decision to end the health order put into place during the end of Trump’s administration in March 2020 in response to the pandemic. They also cited Homeland Security estimates that the surge at the border could rise to around 13,000 migrant encounters per day.
The letter described the situation at the southern border as “a national security and humanitarian disaster.”
Title 42 was put into place in 2020 in response to the pandemic in order to immediately send migrants back over the border to slow the spread of the virus. The GOP is now arguing for the continuation of this policy not to stop a virus, but to stop a spike in border crossing attempts as well as drug smuggling and human trafficking. Fentanyl alone is becoming its own epidemic in America, killing thousands.
On Monday, in preparation for the termination of Title 42, Biden approved the deployment of 1,500 active-duty U.S. troops to the southern border in order to alleviate some of the pressure on Border Patrol and law enforcement. The different Army units are intended to serve in transport and administrative roles for a period of 90 days.
The Republican senators believe the Biden administration’s efforts are not enough and have come too late to deal with the impending worsening crisis. They argue that going back to Title 8 policies won’t be sufficient to take control of the situation without an increase in enforcement.
