In a speech on the Senate floor this week, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accused the president of wanting to hurt federal workers with a government shutdown – and all for no better reason than to build his silly wall, which would only…what? Keep out thousands upon thousands of illegal immigrants, many of whom are criminals and terrorists? What a ridiculous thing to care about!

“The president has called for a shutdown at least 20 times since he came into office,” said Schumer. “You can add at least five or six more times from our meeting. No president should ever say he would be proud to shut the government down. No president should so glibly use the American government, and the millions of workers who work so hard, as a bargaining chip. That is where President Trump is headed.”

Okay, so stop the tape for a second. We would agree that it would not be typical for a president to proudly claim ownership of a shutdown, but this was actually refreshing, to be honest. Trump knows that the Democrats (and, by extension, the media) is going to blame him for this if it goes down, so he’s putting it out there: I don’t care! Let them! He’s not “proud” to shut down the government, he’s proud to do whatever it takes to force Democrats to give him the money needed to construct the wall.

“He has made clear he will hold parts of the government hostage for a petty campaign pledge — that’s all it is,” Schumer said. “If President Trump holds to this position, that unless he gets his wall he’ll shut down the government, who will suffer needlessly? The American people.”

Well, that doesn’t have to happen, now does it? Both Democrats and the White House know that a shutdown is the only solution if the two sides can’t come to an agreement. Both sides have drawn lines in the sand. It takes TWO parties to reach that agreement. It takes TWO parties to orchestrate a shutdown. You can point fingers, lay blame, call Trump’s position “needless” or “petty,” but you cannot wash your hands of your own responsibility, no matter how much the media helps you along.

The government will shut down because you refuse to pay for the border security we need. Plain. Simple. Obvious.
