In an interesting interview with Sean Hannity this week, former Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina said that if Republicans really wanted to rock the boat, they would call former President Barack Obama to testify during the impeachment trial.

Gowdy explained that there is still a great deal the American people do not know about former Vice President Joe Biden’s coercion of the Ukraine government to fire prosecutor Viktor Shokin in 2016. And not only is it imperative that we understand the full extent of the seeming quid pro quo that Biden offered in exchange for Shokin’s firing, it is worth knowing whether or not Obama authorized it.

“Part of impeachment is setting a precedent for what’s going to happen in the future,” Gowdy said. “So, if the vice president can make that assertion, then he is relevant as a witness, but so too is President Obama because I would want to know whether or not he had the authority of the president at the time he made that that pronouncement that there’ll be no loan guarantees unless the prosecutor is fired.”

Gowdy said that the House Democrats are trying to prove that Trump presided over an “unprecedented abuse of power” when he withheld aid from Ukraine. The use of that word – unprecedented – makes Obama’s testimony relevant.

“If President Obama gave Joe Biden permission to condition loan guarantees on the firing of a prosecutor, then that makes both of them potentially relevant as witnesses,” Gowdy said.

At issue is a speech Biden gave in 2018 where he basically admitted to doing exactly what Democrats are currently accusing Trump of doing.

“I had gotten a commitment from Poroshenko and Yanukovych that they would take action against the state prosecutor and they didn’t,” Biden said at the time. “So they were walking out of the press conference, and I said we were not going to give them the $1 billion. They said you have no authority. You are not the president. The president said … I said call him. I’m telling you, you are not getting $1 billion. I said you’re not getting $1 billion and I am going to be leaving here in six hours and if the prosecutor is not fired you are not getting the money. Well, son of a bitch, he got fired.”

Of course, Biden didn’t mention that his son worked for the energy company that was under investigation by that prosecutor when all of this was going down. No, he didn’t mention that, and all his supporters will tell you until they’re blue in the face that Hunter’s cushy job had NOTHING to do with this stick-up.

But then, while House investigators are willing to spend unlimited sums of money looking into Trump’s dealings with Ukraine and Russia, they won’t spend a dime to figure out if Biden is actually telling the truth. No, no, we’re all just supposed to trust that everything was on the up-and-up.

Nothing to see here, folks. Nothing at all.
