(TotalConservative.com) – Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) asked for the anti-Trump rhetoric to get turned down after an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania resulted in one dead shooter and one dead attendee.
At the time of writing there are still more questions than answers about how 20-year-old Thomas Crooks was able to climb on a nearby rooftop and open fire on Trump despite being flagged by members of the crowd as a potential threat before he opened fire.
Johnson argued that the frequent Democrat talking point of claiming Trump’s election would mean the end of the American republic and Constitutional governance “heats up the environment.” He suggested that all parties need to chill out with all the partisan rhetoric and claims of extremism.
Johnson also told viewers that he believed Trump was spared by God. He also highlighted his work on establishing the Honor and Civility Caucus. Since December 2017, Johnson and Florida Democrat Representative Charlie Crist have worked to promote “civility and statesmanship” between members of opposite parties to help facilitate productive dialogue and bipartisan agreements.
Johnson said despite political disagreements, “we’re all American” and that suggests a basic amount of respect and dignity with how we treat one another. Multiple Republicans and Democrats have echoed Johnson’s sentiments.
Despite telling donors during a fundraising call that “it’s time to put Trump in a bullseye” five days prior to the attempt on Trump’s life, Biden called for unity and suggested an overall lowering of the temperature of political rhetoric. Biden suggested that the normalization of political violence like this can’t be allowed to proceed. He added that we use the ballot box, not bullets to resolve our political disagreements.
Multiple investigations have been announced, by the FBI, Congress, and Biden’s administration, as well as local authorities. Many Americans are wondering how 20-year-old Crooks was able to access a police building and get on the roof.
In statements given to the corporate press on July 16, U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said that the building from which Crooks had opened fire was being used by local police, and additionally highlighted that the local cops were responsible for its perimeter as well as securing the inside and roof of the building.
