According to a new internal audit of the State Department, Hillary Clinton broke several serious cybersecurity guidelines by using a private email server. The analysis – a 78-page volume generated by the inspector general – cited “longstanding, systemic weaknesses” in the communications practices of the State Department. And while the audit shows that many of these practices were in place before Clinton was appointed to the head of the agency, she went beyond the systemic failures to jeopardize national security in new and exciting ways.

“By Secretary Clinton’s tenure, the department’s guidance was considerably more detailed and more sophisticated,” the report noted. “Secretary Clinton’s cybersecurity practices accordingly must be evaluated in light of these more comprehensive directives.”

Under those directives, the report says, Clinton was derelict in her duties to protect top-secret information.

Of course, this is nothing we didn’t already know, and it doesn’t shine any new light on Clinton’s legal entanglements. Most people continue to believe that she will be cleared of any wrongdoing, even if the evidence is incontrovertible. She’s the Democratic nominee for president, and the party doesn’t have anyone realistic to jump into her spot. They aren’t about to risk the presidency on Bernie Sanders.

But politically, this story keeps getting worse and worse. There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind about the veracity of this scandal. Not even the mainstream media has been able to completely ignore this issue the way they’ve downplayed and ignored the Benghazi investigation. She may or may not have violated the letter of the law, but there is no disputing the fact that she was extraordinarily cavalier with national secrets. That alone should be enough to disqualify her from the presidency.

But is it really making a difference? A week or two ago, there were a bunch of stories where people were wringing their hands about Donald Trump getting security briefings from the intelligence community. Oh god, he’ll wind up tweeting out confidential missives! But there doesn’t seem to be any concern about Hillary getting those briefings, despite the fact that she’s the only one of the two with a record of security incompetence.

Hillary is still hoping this story will go away, but that’s not going to happen. Thanks to Trump and conservative media, the American people are going to hear about this all the way to November.

Hopefully, at some point, the message starts to get through.
