Talented Director Reveals Plan For Film About Jesus

(TotalConservative.com) – Legendary director Martin Scorsese is going to make a film about Jesus after meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican and hearing the Pope’s call for artists “to protest, to call out, and to shout.”

Giving comments after the Pope’s speech, Scorsese said he is responding by developing a screenplay for a film about God’s only son. The announcement came on Saturday, May 27th at a conference in Rome, “The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination.”

Variety reports that the Pope had a private meeting with Scorsese and his wife, Helen Morris before the conference. Antonio Spadaro, one of the attendees and an editor of a religious magazine said that Scorsese alternated between talking about his films, sharing personal anecdotes, and how the Pope’s appeal for artists to let their audiences “see Jesus” moved him.

Scorsese is a devout Catholic who regularly employs religious content in his work. In 1988, he produced “The Last Temptation of Christ,” which was incredibly controversial at the time. More recently, he created “Silence” which depicts the persecution of Christians and Christian missionaries in feudal Japan during the 17th century. The Vatican hosted a screening of the film when it debuted in 2016.

This wasn’t Scorsese’s first private meeting with the Pontiff. His producer joined him in 2016 to discuss Silence with Pope Francis, as he wanted to show his support for the film. Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver play two Portuguese Jesuits looking for their missing mentor, played by Liam Neeson. They’re persecuted due to their Christianity, and the plight of Japanese Christians is laid bare for modern audiences who may not be aware of the history.

Scorsese will continue to trek around Italy, hosting a masterclass at Rome’s Centro Sperimentale film school, giving a talk about his work at the Casa del Cinema, and appearing on stage for a panel discussion in Bologna as a guest of the Cineteca di Bologna, Italy’s premiere film archive. There’s been no word yet on the plot or release date for Scorsese’s new Christian epic.
