When Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) showed up to catch a flight to Washington on Tuesday, he was probably not expecting to run into throngs of Trump-supporting patriots at the Salt Lake City International Airport. But there they were, and they took none too kindly to seeing their contrarian senator on his way to D.C. where he intended to vote for the certification of the 2020 election results. Caught by several social media videos, Romney is seen weakly defending himself against accusations of treachery by disgruntled conservatives.

“Why aren’t you supporting President Trump?” one woman asked, approaching Romney.

“I do agree with many of the things he is for, and I support those things,” said Romney, missing the point entirely.

Less than pleased with his response, the woman asked Romney why he’s not supporting Trump’s efforts to challenge the election.

“It’s a long story, but we have a Constitution; the Constitution process is clear. I will follow the Constitution, and I will explain all that when we meet in Congress this week,” Romney said.

“You were voted as a conservative to represent the conservative constituents,” the woman argued. “Period.”

“That’s not how the Constitution works,” Romney replied.

“It is,” she said. “You work for us.”

As Romney tried his best to extract himself from the conversation, the women assured him that she is a Utah voter and would see to it that his current term in the Senate was his final one.

“You’re a joke,” the woman said. “Absolute joke, it’s a disgusting shame.”

If Romney thought his problems were over as he put distance between himself and his airport nemesis, he was in for a rude awakening.

The Washington Post reports:

Under dimmed cabin lights on a flight from Salt Lake City on Tuesday, a woman bellowed a rallying cry to a group of Trump supporters headed to D.C. to rally behind the president, urging them to tell fellow passenger Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) “what we think.”

“Traitor! Traitor! Traitor!” they chanted for 20 seconds.

“Resign, Mitt!” another shouted.

The video, which went viral on Tuesday, is the latest sign of a growing divide in the Republican Party over President Trump’s false claims of a rigged election, which Romney has pointedly criticized.

Another woman on the flight suggested that there might be something less-than-honorable about Romney’s commitment to supporting Joe Biden’s victory.

“You don’t listen to your constituents!” she shouted. “We want to know your connection to Burisma and Joe Biden, Mitt Romney.”

We wouldn’t ordinarily support this kind of public harassment of an elected official – and we don’t necessarily support this one. It’s getting a little too close to Maxine Waters territory.

That said, we can only imagine how gratifying it was for these patriots to give Mitt Romney a piece of their mind. Sometimes, even when your actions aren’t necessarily “noble”… well, you’ve got to try it just one time.
