It has been an open secret for weeks that intelligence officials in both the U.S. and the UK have had a close eye on the Wuhan Institute of Virology in terms of pinning down the origins of the coronavirus outbreak. While the media has been cute about this, trying unsuccessfully to conflate the conspiracy theory that the virus was created by Chinese scientists with the very real possibility that the natural virus escaped the Wuhan lab, it’s clear that the truth is going to come out sooner or later. In fact, we’d say that it’s all but a confirmed theory at this point.

At a press conference on Thursday, Trump was asked directly if he’d “seen anything at this point that gives you a high degree of confidence that the Wuhan Institute of Virology was the origin of this virus?”

“Yes, I have,” Trump replied. “Yes, I have.”

Trump did not elaborate on the evidence, citing the sensitive nature of the intelligence, but he left no doubt that suspicions about the lab were as high as they’d ever been.

It was believed for months that COVID-19 originated at an open-air seafood market in Wuhan where food handling practices were…not the best. But over time, that theory began to unravel. For one thing, that market never served exotic animals like pangolins or bats. For another, some of the first people known to contract the virus had never been within blocks of the market.

And finally, the fact that a well-known laboratory – one that just happened to be studying animal coronaviruses – is located only a few short miles away from the market was just a little too coincidental for comfort. The lab’s suspicious proximity to ground zero of the outbreak was only compounded when cables sent from U.S. emissaries in 2018 emerged a couple of weeks ago. In those cables, State Department representatives who toured the Wuhan lab had a stark message: The lab was overrun with incompetence, terrible safety precautions, and other glaring problems that could soon lead to disaster.

China, simply based on their refusal to work with the global community in the early weeks of the outbreak and their attempt to coverup the true nature of the disease, already bears a great deal of responsibility for this pandemic. But if it can be proven that it was their shoddy science research that exposed half the world to death and illness? That’s a whole ‘nother story.
