Sen. Chuck Schumer turned on the crocodile tears this week after touring a border detention facility on Friday with a group of Senate Democrats. Telling the media that the tour was “difficult” to endure and that it was terrible to see children languishing in poor conditions, Schumer tweeted: “This is heart-wrenching. This is wrong. This is not who we are. This has to end now.”
But of course, Schumer and the Democrats have been instrumental in denying the very funds and blocking the very legislation that could actually eliminate these conditions at the border, a fact President Trump did not hesitate to mention in his retort.
“Senator Chuck Schumer has finally gone to the Southern Border with some Democrat Senators,” Trump wrote. “This is a GREAT thing! Nearby, he missed a large group of Illegal Immigrants trying to enter the USA illegally. They wildly rushed Border Patrol. Some Agents were badly injured.
“Based on the comments made by Senator Schumer,” he continued, “he must have seen how dangerous & bad for our Country the Border is. It is not a ‘manufactured crisis,’ as the Fake News Media & their Democrat partners tried to portray. He said he wants to meet. I will set up a meeting ASAP!”
Even this way of putting it lets Schumer off the hook, because the Senate minority leader was one of the loudest voices leading the pack when calling the immigration crisis “manufactured” and “fictional.” Along with Nancy Pelosi, he was content to let the government go into partial shutdown for more than a month if it meant denying funds for border security. It was only after that shutdown ended and the media felt comfortable telling the truth about this disaster that the Democrats began admitting that the crisis is real.
Of course, even now, they don’t acknowledge the reality of what’s going on. To them, the only “crisis” is that Trump is attempting to enforce the law. To them, the only “crisis” is that we aren’t just handing out work permits like candy and letting illegal immigrants flutter off into the wild blue yonder, never to be heard from again. To them, the only “crisis” is that Central Americans aren’t being allowed to simply walk across the border, get a hand stamp, and go about their business.
And as long as they feel there’s political gain to be made from the “Brown Kids in Cages” routine, they’re not going to do a damn thing to address this slow-motion disaster.
