Washington, DC Police Department has confirmed that an elderly couple from Wisconsin has passed away following the incident after four people were struck by lightning Thursday evening in front of the White House.

According to the police, James Mueller, 76, and Donna Mueller, 75, both from Janesville, Wisconsin, passed away as a result of their injuries sustained in the strike that took place in Lafayette Square, a public park located within President’s Park directly north of the White House.

“At 06:52 p.m. DC Fire and EMS received a report of a lightning strike in Lafayette Park with multiple patients,” said Vito Maggiolo, the spokesperson for D.C. Fire and EMS.

“When we arrived we found a total of four patients. There were two adult males, and there were two adult females. All four were suffering from critical, life-threatening injuries. We were able to quickly treat and transport all four patients, and they were all taken to area hospitals,” he added.
