If President Trump was searching for words that would comfort his increasingly-irritated supporters, he found the wrong ones. Many of his fiercest boosters were enraged last week by the news that Trump had struck a deal with the Democrat leadership to “save” DACA with legislation – legislation that would apparently include not a single dollar towards the Wall. In an attempt to keep his supporters from going full mutiny on Thursday, Trump told reporters that construction was still a priority for his administration.

“The wall will come later,” Trump said. “We’re right now renovating large sections of wall, massive sections, making it brand new. We’re doing a lot of renovations, we’re building four different samples of the wall to see which one we’re going to choose, and the wall is going to be built, it will be funded a little bit later.”

On why he didn’t force Democrats to the table on wall funding, Trump said, “Well, we want to get massive border security, and I think both Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer — I think they agree with it. We met last night, as you know, Schumer, Pelosi and a whole group and I think we’re fairly close, but we have to get massive border security.”

But anyone who cheered Trump through the campaign knows that he wasn’t up there promising “massive border security.” And he certainly wasn’t promising amnesty for childhood arrivals. So it’s still a bit puzzling to hear the Democrat leadership claim they have exacted a promise from Trump to protect the “dreamers” without having to approve one thin dime for THE WALL. And it’s even more puzzling to hear Trump essentially say that these illegal immigrants will get their amnesty before the American people get the border wall they were promised.

“Does anybody really want to throw out good, educated and accomplished young people who have jobs, some serving in the military?” Trump asked Thursday. “They have been in our country for many years through no fault of their own – brought in by parents at young age. Plus BIG border security.”

Uh-huh.

Trump’s right that there’s not rabid support for rounding up Dreamers for deportation, but there’s a vast gulf between deportation and amnesty. Take away their unlawful work permits and watch them self-deport. At the very least, kick it to Congress and see what happens. At best, trade limited amnesty for wall funding.

It just doesn’t make sense that Trump would offer the Democrats this gimme without getting anything in return. Does he really think they’re going to begin embracing him as president? Does he really think they’re going to remember this when it comes time to push for construction? Come on!
