Destructive Overnight Attack

In an unprecedented overnight assault, Russia bombarded Ukraine with more than 200 missiles and drones, targeting various regions and critical energy infrastructure. The relentless attack killed at least four people while plunging multiple regions into darkness.

Russia claims the strikes, spanning from midnight until daybreak, precisely hit their designated targets, causing widespread disruption to the power grid.

Two of the victims died when a hotel in Kryvyi Rih was struck, while another two perished in drone attacks in Zaporizhzhia. Kyiv’s air defense systems were overwhelmed as they tried to repel the barrage, successfully shooting down about 15 drones and several missiles. In total, Ukrainian defenses managed to down five missiles and 60 drones during the attack.

Humanitarian and Economic Crisis Deepens

This aggressive operation exacerbates Ukraine’s already fragile energy situation, with critical power facilities damaged in Zaporizhzhia, Rivne, and Lviv regions. Emergency power cuts had to be activated by the national energy company Ukrenergo to stabilize the grid under these intense conditions.

“The energy infrastructure has once again become the target of Russian terrorists. Unfortunately, there is damage in a number of regions,” Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated. He also highlighted the necessity for support from Ukraine’s allies to neutralize the missile launch sites in Russia.

Ukraine is facing its darkest winter as this assault cut power and water supplies, threatening the survival of its population. As if things weren’t bad enough, air raid alerts were active throughout Kryvyi Rih, Kyiv, and several central and eastern regions through the night, keeping residents in a state of constant fear and vigilance.

International Condemnation and Aftermath

The international community, with U.S. President Joe Biden at the forefront, condemned Russia’s actions. “I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, Russia’s continued war against Ukraine and its efforts to plunge the Ukrainian people into darkness,” he said in a statement.

Despite Russia’s claim of hitting all intended targets in Ukraine’s energy network, the attack shed more light on the harsh realities and continued suffering of the Ukrainian people. Al Jazeera’s Alex Gatopoulos described it as one of the worst aerial assaults in recent months, severely crippling the nation’s power and water infrastructures.

Ukraine’s Vow to Persevere

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed a strong response to these heinous attacks, noting that 16 more people were wounded. “We will undoubtedly respond to Russia for this and all other attacks. Crimes against humanity cannot go unpunished,” he insisted. Zelenskyy announced plans to present a peace strategy to U.S. leaders and Presidential candidates, emphasizing his resolve to maintain Ukraine’s sovereignty.

“Crimes against humanity cannot be committed with impunity,” Zelenskyy reiterated on social media.

In the face of this relentless bombardment, Ukraine’s air force continues to hold its ground, successfully testing a domestically produced ballistic missile. Zelenskyy congratulated the defense industry, signaling the nation’s determination to counter these pervasive threats.

In conclusion, the devastation wrought by Russia’s nocturnal missile and drone blitz underscores the urgency for international intervention and support to help the regions that have now been plunged into darkness.
