(TotalConservative.com) – Taiwan’s annual Han Kaung war games began on Monday, July 21. The exercises simulate a Chinese assault on the tiny republic and give the Taiwanese practice repelling an attack. China maintains a claim to Taiwan and considers the territory in revolt. The communist country has been increasing in bellicose rhetoric and military exercises to intimidate and cow its neighbor, despite Taiwan self-governing for over seven decades.
The Han Kaung war games include unscripted orders to respond to imaginary attacks which give the soldiers, pilots, and naval officers practice deploying and responding to an actual Chinese attack.
China has upped its pressure over recent years, staging regular military exercises around the island and increasing the tone of its propaganda in public statements. This year’s games have eliminated showy displays and focused on night operations and operating independently if communications are interrupted.
The military war games are combined with domestic civilian preparedness where missile sirens are tested and city streets evacuated for a half hour during a simulated missile strike in urban areas. Alerts additionally will be issued directly to citizens’ cell phones.
Taiwan President Lai Ching-te has repeatedly called for negotiations but the Chinese aren’t interested in talking.
In June, $360 million worth of missiles and drones were approved for sale to Taiwan by U.S. military contractors. The heightened tensions are resulting in U.S. and Taiwanese authorities taking steps to mitigate the potential for a Chinese attack and buy time for U.S. military assets to arrive in the region.
Representatives of the military have suggested the strategy involves the use of hundreds of underwater, surface, and air-based drones which can be deployed to the area immediately. The weapons systems can then lie in wait and be activated in response to any belligerent behavior by the Chinese communists.
