(TotalConservative.com) – Ukraine is taking heavy losses in its fight against Russia. Russia is seeking a promise that Ukraine will never join NATO, as well as concessions regarding Crimea and two newly formed independent republics, Donetsk and Luhansk, in the Donbas region. Kyiv has been unwilling to concede anything and continues to demand international support, despite waning support for the conflict.
A new report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) published on Sunday, May 26 showed that the Russians have advanced their positions along the entire Ukrainian front, pushing deeper into the country. Putin has been attempting to push the front to the borders of the Donbas to completely force Kyiv out of the two new countries.
Kyiv repeatedly failed to maintain peace agreements like the Minsk Accords to quell combat in the region after the 2014 Ukrainian coup. Russia invaded in late February 2022.
In Luhansk, Russia has conquered the city of Svatove and pushed passed it to the northwest, near the town of Ivanivka. Russia hasn’t confirmed or denied their positioning along the front. In Donetsk, the ISW report showed Russians had advanced toward the southwest fortress city of Avdiivka with heavy fighting ongoing. Independent reports suggested the Russians were advancing closer and closer to the city as of May 26.
The Russian military pushed into Kharkiv during an offensive they began on May 10. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on May 16 that his forces had countered the Russians and they had stabilized the area. He claimed that enemy brigades were making “no progress” at the time.
On Sunday, Zelenskyy suggested that the Russians were massing for another new offensive near the Ukrainian border. ISW commented that the Russians may be baiting the Ukrainians, but it’s too soon to tell exactly what will happen.
Zelenskyy is asking his western providers for permission to attack Russian territory using long-ranged weapons Ukraine was given from abroad. Long ranged artillery, missiles, drones, and soon F-16 fighter jets will all be available for Kyiv’s use, if not already. Allies have condemned the idea of striking Russia as an unnecessary provocation that could exacerbate the war.
