The outcome of this conclave was eagerly anticipated by a large crowd in Saint Peter’s Square, who were alerted to the decision by the traditional white smoke emanating from the Sistine Chapel chimney, followed by the joyous peals of Saint Peter’s Basilica bells.

He served as the bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, and held positions such as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops at the Vatican. Following the news that Leo would be the new Pope, reactions began pouring in.
