The State Department first designated Iran a state sponsor of terrorism back in 1984 and has since documented Tehran’s support for groups like Hezbollah and Hamas through money, weapons, and training. The Trump administration in 2019 designated Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps a foreign terrorist organization outright, calling it the regime’s “primary means of directing and implementing its global terrorist campaign.” Earlier this year, the White House laid out decades of Iranian attacks that killed and maimed American citizens and troops through proxy militias. Congress reaffirmed the same position in 2026, with a House resolution declaring Iran “continues to be the largest state sponsor of terrorism.” Against that record, Pezeshkian’s claim of pure self-defense asks a lot of anyone paying attention. Meanwhile, a UN nuclear watchdog voted this month to refer Iran to the Security Council for failing to comply with its safeguard obligations, the first such referral in nearly two decades — hardly the resume of a peaceful actor Iran claims to be. For a conservative audience that has watched this regime chant “Death to America” for generations while funding terror proxies across the region, the UN walkout was not a diplomatic snub.
