Britain’s left-wing experiment just collapsed — Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned on June 22, 2026, pushed out by his own Labour Party after just two years in power.
Story Highlights
- Keir Starmer announced his resignation as UK Prime Minister and Labour Party leader on June 22, 2026, outside 10 Downing Street.
- His own party forced him out after Labour lost 1,000 local council seats in May and over 95 Labour members of parliament had called for his exit.
- Former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham won a special election and quickly confirmed he will run to replace Starmer as party leader and prime minister.
- Nominations for a new Labour leader open July 9, with a new prime minister expected before Parliament returns in September 2026.
Starmer’s Own Party Showed Him the Door
Keir Starmer made his resignation announcement outside his official home at 10 Downing Street on the morning of June 22, 2026. He told the nation he had “heard the answer” from his parliamentary party and accepted it “with good grace.” He informed King Charles III of his decision and asked Labour’s National Executive Committee to open leadership nominations on July 9. He said he will stay on as caretaker prime minister until the contest is complete.[11]
Starmer’s fall came fast after a brutal May. Labour lost more than 1,000 local council seats across England and was removed from power in Wales after 27 years. The anti-immigration party Reform UK swept up nearly 1,300 seats in England alone. By mid-May, over 95 Labour members of parliament had publicly called for Starmer to resign. One cabinet minister, Health Secretary Wes Streeting, and four junior ministers quit in protest.[4]
Andy Burnham Steps Forward as Front-Runner
The final blow to Starmer came when Andy Burnham won a special election in the Makerfield district on June 18, 2026, pulling in 54.8% of the vote and defeating Reform UK. Burnham’s win gave Labour members a clear alternative leader. Many Labour members of parliament immediately called for a leadership change so Burnham could take over. On the same morning Starmer resigned, Burnham confirmed he will run for the party leadership.[4]
Burnham is described as Labour’s most popular politician right now. Even Wes Streeting — who had been seen as a potential rival — announced he backs Burnham for the top job. If the party rallies behind Burnham without a contested vote, Starmer could be out as early as July. The leadership process is set to wrap up before Parliament returns from summer recess on September 1.[10]
A Pattern of Failure That Sound Familiar
This is the third time in four years that a British prime minister has been pushed out by their own party rather than losing a general election. Starmer won a massive mandate in 2024, promising stable government and economic growth. Instead, his tenure was marked by a prolonged cost-of-living crisis, policy reversals, and a string of scandals — including controversy over his appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to Washington.[14]

President Trump called it early. He posted on Truth Social that Starmer “will resign” after failing “badly” on immigration and energy — two issues that sound very familiar to American conservatives who lived through similar failures under the Biden administration. An Ipsos poll taken just days before the resignation found 52% of British voters believed Starmer should step down, up five points from May.[14] The collapse of Starmer’s government is a clear reminder that voters on both sides of the Atlantic are fed up with left-wing policies that drive up costs, ignore borders, and deliver broken promises.
