(TotalConservative.com) – Over 200 migrants may be dead after an overcrowded boat sank off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea, according to reports from the United Nations.
The U.N. International Organization for Migration (IOM) is reporting that several hundred thousand Africans have migrated from the Horn of Africa into Yemen. This boat in particular was carrying an estimated 260 Ethiopian and Somali people and disembarked from the Somali coast, per reports from the migrants themselves.
The boat left Somali around 3 a.m. local time on June 9. It’s unclear what caused the boat to sink. Forty-nine of the migrants were confirmed dead and roughly 140 are still missing; 71 people were rescued. The search for survivors is ongoing.
A Yemeni official told the corporate press that fishermen and locals helped rescue 78 migrants who reported there were as many as 100 people still missing. Rescue operations continue this week hoping to find survivors still floating in the Gulf of Aden.
Africans are frequently migrating to Yemen, despite the fact that the country is in the midst of an ongoing civil war. Corporate press outlets have suggested that the number of migrants has tripled over the past few years. The estimates from 2021 suggested nearly 30,000 people migrated from Africa to Yemen, whereas by 2023 that estimate tripled to over 90,000.
Additionally they reported just under 2,000 deaths and missing people that resulted from attempts to make the journey.
The American Coast Guard also rescued and repatriated hundreds of Haitian and Bahamian migrants attempting to illegally enter the U.S. in early June traveling via overcrowded and dangerous boats. Operation Vigilant Sentry (OVS) is a regular program that monitors and intercepts illegal migrant boats in the Caribbean.
They intercepted several boats and returned the 305 travelers to their countries of origin. Haiti’s government has effectively collapsed with criminal gangs in control of much of the country. Over 90,000 people have already fled the small island nation thus far and there’s no resolution in sight.
