(TotalConservative.com) – A crowd of hundreds of supporters rallied in Pittsburgh on Sunday for Rep. Summer Lee (D). Her primary on Tuesday, April 23 will show whether or not her strong support for the Palestinian cause in Gaza will have impacted her electoral chances.
Lee was joined by Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Tennessee state representative Justin Jones (D). Jones rose to prominence after being briefly removed from the state legislature over a protest he helped organize to advance gun control in the wake of transgender shooter Audrey Hale murdering three adults and three children in a Christian school in Nashville last year.
Ocasio-Cortez and Jones used the platform to promote the idea that their opposition was being funded by billionaires and big money interests. Lee is running in the 12th District of Pennsylvania which is based in Pittsburgh and some of the surrounding areas.
The event had a small group of protesters who had their signs deployed outside the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers building. Their displays featured support for Israel and criticism for Ocasio-Cortez and Lee.
Ocasio-Cortez compared her experience of fighting “for common sense in the House” to Lee’s experience. Ocasio-Cortez suggested both women have walked alone in their battles and that it was time for voters to “show the world” that they are not alone. She suggested winning the contest wasn’t enough but rather that they had to win big.
Lee has faced criticism for her staunch support for Palestinians in Gaza in the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas attack which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and kicked off a war that has caused over 30,000 Palestinian deaths and virtually leveled the territory to rubble. Lee was one of the first Democrats to call for a cease fire in the first week following the attack.
Lee has highlighted her status as the first black woman to potentially represent a district in Pennsylvania. She also declared her support for unions and affordable housing during her remarks.
