FDA Issues Warning On Mushroom Chocolate Bars

(TotalConservative.com) – After psychedelic chocolate bars caused a wave of illness in consumers, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning against the brand and its other products.

At least a dozen people across eight states became sick after consuming “microdosing” chocolate bars produced by Diamond Shruumz. The FDA is now warning people and suggests avoiding consuming the brand’s products, specifically the “Microdosing Chocolate Bars, the “Infused Cones,” and “Micro Dose and Macro Dose Gummies.” The Diamond Shruumz products are sold in smoke shops throughout the country and online and come in a variety of flavors such as cookies and cream and birthday cake.

According to the FDA warning, the people who fell ill from the products reported various symptoms, from seizures, confusion, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness, to agitation, nausea, vomiting, and abnormal heart rates. Why the products were making consumers sick has yet to be determined.

The company markets the chocolate bars as “trippy little squares” that can be served as “microdoses.” Microdosing is consuming a small portion of psychedelic substances in order to achieve a mild effect. But Diamond Shruumz claims their products do not contain any psychedelic compounds, including psilocybin, the well-known compound in so-called “magic mushrooms.” The company said their products only contain mushrooms they described as “nootropic and functional,” such as Chaga, Reishi, and Lion’s Mane mushrooms.

The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are collaborating with local state agencies and poison control centers to investigate what may be causing the sickness. Dr. Steven Dudley of the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center said investigators believed the substance responsible was close enough to psilocybin to produce similar effects, which is why it was marketed as such.

Such products have become more popular over recent years, and there has been little to no regulatory oversight and quality control over products. Sometimes the products do, in fact, contain psilocybin and other substances that could have psychedelic effects on consumers. Most of these products haven’t undergone independent testing, meaning consumers cannot really know if what they’re getting is safe.
