(TotalConservative.com) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has no plans to comment publicly on two terror attacks that resulted in the deaths of dozens of Russians. The Russian state of Dagestan was attacked by Muslim extremists on Sunday, June 23.
The terrorists invaded an orthodox church as well as a Jewish synagogue in Derbent, along the coast, and opened fire, killing multiple people. Gunmen also attacked a police traffic stand and another church 80 miles to the north in the state capital of Makhachkala around the same time.
Russian authorities have also denounced a missile attack aimed at the Crimean city of Sevastopol by Ukrainians using Americans weapons as an act of terrorism. The missiles were destroyed by air defenses, but failing debris caused property damage and the deaths of five Russians as well as additional injuries.
When asked by the press, Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Russian president has no plans to issue specific public comments about the attacks. Russian police are reporting the deaths of 15 police and four civilians in the attacks in Dagestan. Five of the gunmen were also killed in the fighting. No organization has claimed responsibility for the incidents.
The targeting of Christian and Jewish religious centers is suggestive that the attackers were Muslim extremists. That was confirmed by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) which said that the most likely organization responsible was Islamic State Khorsan (IS-K). That same organization claimed responsibility for the March attack on the Crocus concert hall in Moscow which resulted in the deaths of 145 people.
Western observers have suggested that Moscow is pushing a narrative that Western intelligence agencies are responsible to avoid accountability for internal security failures. By blaming the West, Moscow maintains the party line that the war in Ukraine is really a battle against Western imperialism.
Whether it’s terror attacks within Russia, or foiled assassination attempts against Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to drive terrorism in the region.
