(TotalConservative.com) – Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania said that anti-Israel demonstrators who have captured university campuses nationwide are not helping to establish peace in the Middle East, but are instead making the situation worse.
On Sunday, May 5, Fetterman appeared on CBS and told “Face the Nation” host that anti-Israel protesters are working against establishing peace in the Middle East, And that he’s frustrated by the fact that Hamas took many hostages on Oct. 7, 2023, who have still not been released.
Fetterman said the demonstrations “haven’t been helpful” and have “ironically” worked “against peace” in the region. He said it was also “very strange” to him that the current protests haven’t been focusing on the fact that Hamas rejected “a very valid ceasefire.”
The Pennsylvania senator added why those protesting should be demanding Hamas take a ceasefire deal, which “would end all of the trauma and chaos” in Gaza. He also specified that he doesn’t believe conditions should be placed on Israel and that the recent conflict is entirely the fault of Hamas. Fetterman maintains that “If Hamas just surrendered” and released all of the hostages, “the situation could end.”
Fetterman said the hostage situation has particularly frustrated him because he believes securing their release “should really be in front of the conversation” and would also end the war “immediately.”
Soon after Fetterman made his remarks, Hamas accepted a ceasefire deal proposed by leaders in Egypt and Qatar, but Israel rejected the deal. The Jewish state said the proposal did not meet its own core demands and that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) would follow through with its planned assault on Rafah to weed out Hamas fighters further. They launched the assault on Tuesday morning, May 7.
Since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing about 1,200 and taking around 250 hostages, Israel has continued its military campaign in Palestinian territories. Over 35,000 have died as a result of this campaign. Some of the hostages have been released, but many remain captive and Israel remains intent on eliminating Hamas.
