17 GOP Senators Help Pass Ukraine Funding Bill

(TotalConservative.com) – After the failure of the “border” bill which featured tens of billions of dollars for Ukraine, Senate Republicans had a mask-off moment, showing what’s really important to them. Instead of getting a stand-alone bill addressing the southern border crisis and rampant flood of illegals coming into the country, Sen. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer presented a foreign funding bill to exclusively fund foreign wars abroad. The measure passed with help from 17 Senate Republicans.

The bill contained $95 billion in foreign funding, just a tenth of a trillion bucks, no big deal. No surprises that Sen. Mitch McConnell supported the move, he’s been a big supporter of foreign wars, including Ukraine. He received the support of South Dakota Sens. Mike Rounds and John Thune, Louisiana Sens. John Kennedy and Bill Cassidy, Alaska’s Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski, Mississippi’s Roger Wicker, Maine’s Susan Collins, Indiana’s Todd Young, Utah’s Mitt Romney, Iowa’s Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst, Texas Sen. John Cornyn, and Jerry Moran from Kansas. If those are you Senators perhaps you may want to give them a call.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) opposed the measure due to his opposition to the Israeli war in Gaza.

Schumer called it “a good first step” and suggested the bill was required for “national security.” The Senate is now negotiating on amendments, but the bill is unlikely to emerge for a vote in the House anytime soon. Conservative Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said he plans to slow it down as much as possible.

In comments given to CNN, Paul suggested it could be “a week or a month.” He said he intended to force the discussion and demand his colleagues justify a massive expenditure for foreign countries while the U.S. itself is imperiled due to the southern border crisis.

Republican Sen. Kevin Cramer (ND) suggested the bill could be modified via amendments, but suggested the process will take some time regardless. The Senate has a scheduled recess coming up, and it’s uncertain if it will begin on time as Schumer is intent on getting the bill passed.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) suggested he has ideas about amendments that would secure the border, suggesting that is possible. Either way it seems as if Congress lacks the political will to simply say no to continued funding of foreign wars.
