(TotalConservative.com) – A 2-year-old boy was killed on the evening of Friday, November 17th when his 3-year-old brother shot and killed him with a gun he retrieved from his mother’s purse, according to police. Police reported being summoned to Northlake Methodist Hospital at approximately 8:30 p.m. after being told a child was shot and killed.
The mother, whose name is being withheld for the time being, reported to officers that the elder boy was in her bedroom when he discovered the loaded weapon and fired it at the younger child. The mother said she then rushed the injured child to the hospital.
Police were investigating the death as a homicide and collected evidence from their family’s home in Gary, Indiana. The Lake County Coroner officially determined the cause of death was an accident. Gary Police posted on Facebook confirming the shooting and urging families to responsibly secure and store their firearms.
Mayor Jerome Prince and Police Chief Anthony Titus issued a joint statement expressing their sympathies. They said the case acts as a potent reminder for adults with children to store their firearms responsibly. Police also reiterated that they offer free gun locks to community members and suggested residents take advantage.
Miami police arrested a man in connection with another child-shooting incident that resulted in the death of a 4-year-old girl in Florida. Quavanta Ennels, 25, was hit with weapons charges due to his status as a convicted felon. He may also face negligence and additional charges.
In an eerily similar situation, a young child pulled a gun out of a backpack that belonged to Ennels and shot another child in the head, killing her instantly. Ennels admitted his status as a felon to the police during their investigations. He also said that he left the bag with the weapon in a room with the children unsupervised.
Ennels was convicted in 2016 of robbery with a gun and lost his legal rights to own a firearm as a consequence. He was released from prison in 2018.
