TotalConservative.com) – Former President Donald Trump altered his public position on abortion this week, stating in a Monday interview that he believes limiting the controversial procedure to six weeks is too strict.
It appears Trump’s comments were specifically criticizing the recent “heartbeat bill” signed into Florida law by Gov. Ron DeSantis. Although DeSantis still hasn’t officially declared his bid for the White House in 2024, almost everyone agrees that’s exactly what he plans on doing. Trump knows it, too, which is why he keeps finding any angle he can to take jabs at the Florida governor, who is the most obvious threat to Trump winning the Republican nomination.
During the interview, Trump said that although DeSantis was making decisions according to his personal judgment, he didn’t really know what he was doing when he signed his new legislation, and claims that many “within the pro-life movement feel that [six weeks] was too harsh.” It’s not clear who among pro-lifers the former president was referring to.
DeSantis signed the bill banning six-week abortions last month after originally signing a law banning abortion up to fifteen weeks the previous year. Despite the short timeframe to terminate a pregnancy, the bill does allow exceptions for cases where the mother’s life is in danger, incest, and rape.
Trump didn’t go into detail about what restrictions he actually supports, only touting the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the role he played in that decision. It’s unlikely taking this position against DeSantis’ six-week ban will win him favor amongst pro-lifers, especially since most conservatives want to ban the procedure entirely.
DeSantis has been on a roll in his home state, passing bill after bill in Florida to push back against what is commonly called “woke” ideology and to promote conservative values. It seems he’s trying to get as much done in his gubernatorial position before launching his national political campaign as he aims for the presidency.
